Through the past few years, AEFJN has been in the vanguard of collaborative initiatives between the church and non-church actors. It seeks to leverage the enormous structures of the Church in African to support the struggles of African communities against resources grabbing. There have been varying degrees of openness to this new experience. However, the recent meeting of the Standing Committee of Regional Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (RECOWA) stands out. The openness of the bishops to the inputs of the Civil Society is highly commendable, and the outcome of the meeting tells its own story. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the position of the regional episcopal body would be appropriated in the various local Churches and national episcopal conferences within the region.
