In our work we hear daily the cry of the poor and of the earth, and we seek ways to be in solidarity with them. The Church is called upon always to stand with the poor and to take sides with those whose dignity are violated or ignored. AEFJN in collaboration with CIDSE, actors in Our Land is Our Life platform and other International networks are currently accompanying some Maasai indigenous peoples in Tanzania to make their voices heard and their suffering visible. These indigenous communities in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Endulen are facing eviction, ostensibly to expand the lucrative game reserve business.
In this region, the Catholic Church has been very active for a long time, providing health and education services and thus substantially supporting the people. For its part, the Tanzanian government is now withdrawing financial support for these facilities in order to cripple them and forcefully evict the Massai community. As central as the preservation of creation is, it is essential not to use it as camouflage for the primary intention of the Tanzanian Government at the detriment of the marginalised Massai community. Conversely, it is imperative to recognise and honour their contribution to the preservation of biodiversity.
On the 20th of February at 2 pm CET, AEFJN , CIDSE(“Coopération Internationale pour le
Développement et la Solidarité”), and other Faith actors will co-organize an online-meeting with the Archdiocese of Arusha and the people affected by the forced evictions strategies of the Government of Tanzania. This meeting will provide a better understanding of the context for the Archdiocese of Arusha and a solid ground for a more coordinated collaboration among the different stakeholders.
